The Church of Our Saviour and the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a midtown Manhattan parish, seeks a qualified Director of Music and Organist, beginning January 1, 2022.

The Director of Music and Organist works collaboratively with the Pastor/Administrator and the Pastoral Ministry Associate in planning and implementing the music and liturgies at the Church of Our Saviour and the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, incorporating the rich tradition and range of sacred music. Primary responsibilities include:

Director of Music and Organist for Liturgical Celebrations
• Play the organ for four Sunday liturgies, funerals, and weddings
• Play the organ for Christmas, Holy Week, and holy days of obligation
• Schedule, train, and oversee professional cantor(s) for liturgies with music
• Select music for liturgies (propers, hymns, psalmody, solo repertoire) with guidance from the Pastor/Administrator
• At various times throughout the year, and in consultation with the Pastor/Administrator, hire and direct a professional schola to sing for liturgies (i.e. Christmas and Holy Week) Rehearsals
• Rehearsal with cantor prior to Sunday liturgies, funerals, and weddings
• Rehearsal with the schola (as required)

Administrative Tasks
• Oversee maintenance of musical instruments, in collaboration with the business manager

• Create weekly worship aids
• Inform business manager of musicians to be paid
• Meet with couples to plan music for weddings (~10 per year)
• Meet with families to plan funerals and memorial Masses (~5 per year)

Qualifications include
• Excellent organ skills (hymnody, repertoire, and improvisation)
• Experience in choral conducting
• Degree in music or equivalent experience
• Good knowledge of the role of music in the Roman Catholic liturgy
