Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Greensboro, North Carolina, a parish of approx. 2000 families, is seeking a full time Director of Music. The Music Director is an exempt position with full benefits and a base pay $55-65k annual salary. The new Music Director will continue to develop the sacred music program with the heart and mind of the Church, and to work directly with the pastor in an advisory capacity to ensure the reverent celebration of the Holy Mass.
The candidate must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in music either with organ performance or choral conducting. The candidate must be skilled in organ performance, possess a knowledge of Gregorian Chant and simpler forms of English chant, be capable of conducting, training, and catechizing cantors and choirs, and must live the Catholic Faith with interpersonal, organizational, and administrative excellence. It is highly desired that the candidate have a graduate degree or equivalent training and or experience in music especially as it pertains to organ performance and or choral conducting. The candidate would preferably have experience with Tridentine Form of the Mass and its musical and liturgical tradition especially to continue to direct and develop the Schola and choir for the weekly EF Latin Mass. Some Spanish proficiency is desired and a willingness to work and develop a Spanish choir. It is desired that the candidate would have experience working with and developing children’s choirs to develop a children’s choir working both with the parish and school. The ideal candidate would also be a competent vocalist. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Publisher or equivalent is desired for producing or assisting in production of necessary programs and or worship aids.
The position entails assisting at or coordinating the music for the 5 weekend Masses Sat 5PM Sun 9, 11, 1PM Tridentine Form Latin Mass, and 5PM Mass in Spanish. In addition to the weekend schedule during the school year the weekly 8:45AM School Mass, 20-30 funerals, approx 10-20 weddings English and Spanish combined each year, along with occasional Quinceañera. The weddings and quinceañeras provide opportunities for additional income over and above the base salary. Seasonally 3-4 annual First Holy Communion Masses and 2-3 Confirmations, as well as all Solemnities and their Vigils, require the presence of the Director of Music. The new director of music would need to hold, schedule, and coordinate weekly and other regularly scheduled rehearsals for cantors, volunteer choirs which would preferably also include combined choir rehearsals for combined choir performances for large seasonal liturgies/solemnities i.e. Anniversary of the Dedication of the Parish.
Upon the arrival of the pastor a year ago, there was no preexisting hymnal or pew missal the parish will be implementing the use of the Word and Eucharist bilingual pew missal and in collaboration with the new Music Director the pastor hopes to move the parish into the Saint Michael Hymnal or another hymnal with equal or similar offerings to meet the multi-cultural and Liturgical Tradition needs. The church is blessed with wonderful acoustics, magnificent Kleuker organ, and recently fully updated sound system 2015-16. The organ and acoustics are a perfect compliment to the beautiful gothic architecture of this historic Greensboro Catholic Church dedicated in Honor of Mrs. Julian Price Bryan.
