The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is looking to fill the position of Director of Sacred Music at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston, Texas.

Principal Duties:
• Accompany the daily Seminary Community Mass
• Accompany the principal hours of the Divine Office (Lauds & Vespers), depending on the degree of solemnity
• Create professional, high-quality worship aids for the Mass and Divine Office on a regular basis
• Coach and rehearse a team of seminarian cantors
• Develop and rehearse the seminarian schola to augment liturgical celebrations with chant & polyphony
• Oversee and collaborate with the Spanish-language ensemble
• Hold semi-regular sessions with each class of seminarians (Pre-Theology I-II, Theology I-IV), for the purposes of (1) general exposure to sacred music; (2) building and development of skills related to chanting as celebrants of the liturgy; (3) practicing specific chants for the appropriate level of formation (e.g. dialogues, collects, prefaces); (4) occasional rehearsal of seasonal music

Reports directly to the Director of Liturgical Formation, who is a priest on the Formation Faculty of the Seminary

Prerequisites:
• Must be a practicing Roman Catholic and have an appreciation for the priesthood and priestly formation
• Masters-level degree in music
• Minimum of five years’ experience as a parish music director
• Proficiency in playing the pipe organ, covering a number of genres (hymnody; accompaniment of the Divine Office; improvisation; preludes and postludes)
• Practical knowledge of the Church’s tradition of liturgical chant, both Gregorian and vernacular
• Familiarity with the Spanish-language repertoire of songs and hymnody in use in parishes
