  • That's beautiful, Tomjaw!
    Becket was unique.
I know of no other country which produced the likes of him in those days of the tugs-of-war betwixt crown and miter.
I'm still waiting for one of our Ordinariate churches to adopt Becket as its patron.
He seems such an obvious choice - I wait but do not hold my breath.

Two men called Thomas have been Lord Chancellor (and head of the goverment machine) to English kings called Henry. Have opposed their kings over royal denial of papal authority, been martyred for that opposition, and subsequently canonised. Odd, that. Also odd that both these kings fell out badly with their wives.
  • Hawkins,

I have noticed those parallels for many years, but I'm puzzled as to the object lesson we can (or should, or must) draw from them.

    Should we

    1) Not name our children Thomas unless we want them to be martyred?
    2) Hope that the Duke of Cambridge doesn't die, because his little brother is Prince Henry, unless we want our children to be martyred?
    3) Require that no royal princes be named Henry -- although Prince Albert became King George VI, so I'm not sure that helps -- unless they promise not to appoint Thomas as chancellor?
    4) Men named Henry have trouble staying married?
    5) Something else ..?
