Funny. A choir I once sang in featured a Rutter piece for several years in a row for the Christmas concert. Then one one day we picked up our music folders and someone examined, I can't believe it's not Rutter! hearkening back to the old I can't believe it's not butter advertisement.
Someone once told me, quite emphatically, that after age 35, no one has any business being in choir.
At the time, I was speechless; but I wish I still had that person's contact information. I would send this right off - this lovely choir certainly put THAT away. :-) thanks for posting this!
I think some of The Powers that Be do the all black thing because they think it's chic and avant garde. What I've noticed in groups I've been with who do this is that invariably at least one person will look at themselves in horror under stage lighting, saying: "Oh my, I thought this was black when I put it on, but it's navy blue/forest green/charcoal grey! Do you think anyone will notice?"
Avant garde it most certainly ain't. It was Spanish court dress (at least in color) in the 16th century. What it is is simple and undistracting. (I much prefer the jewel tone convention.)
