St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church Director of Music Overview St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, a 2000+ family parish with a large Catholic school located in Madison, WI, seeks a practicing Catholic musician with experience in directing parish music. This is a new, full-time position, created from several previously part-time jobs. Strong organ and conducting skills are required, as well as an ability to create a unified music ministry program. The Director of Music is responsible for coordinating all aspects of parish liturgical music including five weekend Masses, and school liturgies. He or she is responsible for scheduling and training all volunteer and paid musicians, as well as developing new ensembles and recruiting members. Additionally, he or she chairs an organ committee and oversees the purchase of and fundraising for a new organ. A Bachelor’s degree in music, liturgy or a related field is required; Master’s degree preferred. A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in parish ministry is preferred. Salary is based on education and experience with additional stipends for weddings and funerals. A full benefits package is available. Duties and Responsibilities • Serve directly as accompanist, choir director, or cantor for most parish liturgies. Parish liturgies include: 52 weekends, 5 Masses per weekend; Holy days of obligation, Ash Wednesday, Triduum, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, Reconciliation Services, Anointing Masses, Confirmation, Stations of the Cross, and other liturgies as designated by the Pastor • Accompany the 9:00 Sunday Parish Choir (September through May) • In consultation with the Pastor and collaboration with the Director of Liturgy, be responsible for the selection of music for all parish liturgical celebrations • Accompany daily Masses at which school children are present. Select music and recruit and train volunteer musicians to assist at these Masses. • Develop new choral ensembles including a chant choir and a children’s choir • Train and prepare parish accompanists and cantors; prepare and distribute music to all musicians • Recruit and coordinate paid and volunteer instrumental musicians • Establish an organ committee to oversee the purchase of and fundraising for a church organ • Manage the music budget, coordinate musician stipends, maintain copyright licenses • Create and produce worship aids (on occasion) for parish liturgies • Maintain upkeep of choir loft and instruments, manage the sound system and electronic hymn boards • Provide for the musical education and formation of parish musicians and for the parish at-large • Communicate with the Pastor and Director of Liturgy on a regular basis and attend parish staff meetings • Other duties as assigned by the Pastor
