Leap day is today - February 24th, 2020
  • According to the Roman liturgical calendar, today is the leap day. Not being the 29th of February, it kind of creeps up on you, and I almost missed it! My notes HERE (re-post of a blog post I put up last time around).

  • Jonathan,

Does that mean that "bisextili" means something about 12s or 24s, instead of "month with an improper number of days?

Does it not mean having two sixes, ie. a month on which the 'sixth day before the Kalends of March occurs twice'

yes, though there was not universal agreement whether the day inserted was what we in our current calendar would now call the 24th or the 25th of February. The Roman sanctoral calendar eventually settled on the former interpretation. IIRC, an annex/appendix (one of many) in The Oxford Companion to the Year: An Exploration of Calendar provides a nearly exhaustive overview of this trivia tidbit.
