General Position Description
The Director of Liturgical Music/Organist is responsible for the liturgical music program, working closely with the Director of Liturgy. The Director reports to the Rector and performs such additional duties as the Rector may assign.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Serving as organist for daily Mass and morning prayer as well as for evening prayer.
2. Coordinating volunteer seminarian organists.
3. Being a member of the Liturgy and Spiritual Life Committee, which meets monthly.
4. Developing the house music repertoire and uses it through the regular scheduling of hymns and short house music practices as needed. This repertoire should incorporate a range of traditional (whether English or Latin), contemporary and Spanish hymnody.
5. Scheduling hymns for: the Liturgy of the Hours (weekdays); Masses (weekdays and Sundays); and special liturgies (e.g., New Seminarians' Orientation, Weekend of Recollection/Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotion, Annual Retreat, Days of Recollection or Renewal, Institution of Lector, Institution of Acolytes, Admission to Candidacy, Ordination of Deacons). They are assigned according to the liturgical guidelines of the Seminary (e.g., our interpretation of the principle of “progressive solemnity”).
6. Recruiting, training, and scheduling seminarians for the following ministries: cantor, psalmist (from the ranks of cantors), instrumentalists, scholae, and seminary choir.
7. Maintaining musical instruments which includes scheduling tuning of the two pianos, keeping a list of needed maintenance to the organ in St. Bernard’s and Immaculate Conception chapels, and keeping water in the humidifier in OLH so the piano will remain tuned.
8. Maintaining the music library for the seminary choirs which means ordering new music as needed and updating the files of music.
9. Involving seminarians in music ministry.
10. Conducting the respective pastoral pusic (PAMU) courses.
11. Serving as a resource for seminarians, helping them to learn Missal chants,
12. Serving as organist for annual priest retreat for morning prayer and Mass.
13. Providing assistance for weddings organized by university Campus Ministry, recognizing that the work and fee will be decided through direct interaction with the chaplain of the university.

Education and Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of five years of experience in liturgical music direction and being an organist.
Preferably at least a master’s degree in music.

1. Must exhibit a love for the priesthood.
2. Must exhibit a high degree of integrity, organizational skill, dependability, a strong work ethic and ability to collaborate with others.
3. Must have the ability to work independently, perform multi-tasks and demonstrate competence in all areas of responsibility.
4. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
5. Must be able to work with all members of the seminary community in a professional and charitable manner.
6. Must be able to use Windows and Microsoft Word and Excel.
7. Must be familiar with the relevant liturgical documents.
8. Must be sensitive to the diversity of the seminary community, not only ethnically but musically (using good and theologically sound traditional and contemporary music).
9. Must be sensitive to that fact that many of our seminarians will be serving populations which include immigrants, primarily Spanish.

Salary
This is a full-time position with full benefits and annual, holiday and sick leave. Competitive salary commensurate to experience.
