Los Angeles, CA: Full-Time Director of Music and Organist
  • St. Anthony of Padua Church, Catholic parish in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena has an immediate opening for a full-time (with L.A. Archdiocesan benefits) director of music and organist. APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2019.

    St. Anthony Catholic Church is a multi-ethnic Catholic parish with English and Spanish Masses. The organist-director of music will develop and maintain a high-quality sacred music ministry well-formed in the traditions of the Latin Rite Catholic Church.

    The director of music reports directly to the pastor. The director of music is responsible for exercising supervision over all aspects of liturgical music in the parish and for leading music at three weekend liturgies, including playing piano (currently a Yamaha C6 grand) and, in the near future, organ. The parish has engaged the services of Rosales Organ Builders (www.rosales.com) for its new instrument.

    IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS
    • Knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy

    • Fluency in English and either fluency in Spanish or strong working knowledge; a willingness to work towards fluence through study

    • Good keyboard (piano for now, organ later) skills and good vocal skills; the ability to lead congregational song from the keyboard when necessary, in English and in Spanish

    • Familiarity with the Catholic choral music tradition a plus, from the Medieval and Renaissance eras to the present time; and the skills to introduce a traditional repertoire to a parish more experienced with contemporary music

    • Experience singing and conducting chant and the skill to train both choirs and congregation to sing chant (vernacular—English and Spanish—and Latin)

    • Experience conducting choirs a plus

    • Familiarity with the Extraordinary Form is a plus

    • A bachelor’s degree or higher in music, preferably choral conducting or organ
