St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky, is accepting applications for a full-time (salaried) director of sacred music and organist. The director of music will answer directly to and work closely with the pastor in planning liturgies. The applicant must be proficient in the organ and must have vocal and conducting ability. The applicant must have a sound understanding of sacred music in its various forms (chant, hymnody, and polyphony). This is a great opportunity to build a chant (Latin and English) choir. Preference will be given to one who possesses at least a bachelor’s degree in music.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities: • Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church. • High level of skill in organ, as well as singing and vocal training. • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to train and lead choirs. • A working knowledge of Catholic music and Catholic liturgy. • Ability to work with the pastor in planning liturgies. • Give several lectures (3-4) yearly to the parish on the nature and history of liturgy and sacred music. • Offer at least one choral concert (e.g., Advent/Christmas Lessons & Carols) yearly.
