Italian question

A friend of mine is a writer, and knowing that I'm a church musician, asked me the following question:
In Italian, is there an equivalent for our verb "to chant," or do they just have one verb which encompasses every type of singing?

I don't know the answer. Anyone care to comment?

Its just the one verb: cantare.

The noun chant is “il canto” or more specifically “il canto gregoriano”

You can’t fight the rubrics of the NO with reason or language... find a TLM so you can sing the “chant” without being defensive
