This is to highlight what appears to be an important contribution to the literature about the relationship betwixt the organ and congregational singing. It is reviewed in the current issue of The American Organist (pp. 60, ff.), and is titled Organ Accompaniment of Congregational Song: Historical Documents and Settings, Vol. 12. (Part I: Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries); and Vol. 13 (Part 2: XVIIIth Century Germany); ed. Robin A. Leaver & Daniel Zager. Colfax, N.C.: Wayne Leupold Editions.
This is a lengthy and greatly informative review, yielding much information about the methods of accompaniment, the role of the organ as an accompanying instrument as well as merely a pitch-setting instrument for a capella singing by the congregation, the role of chorale-related organ literature, and much more. One would recommend highly both the review and the book.
