Need A Choir Leader/Cantor - Orange, CA

    I need some help. I have been looking for a choir leader since November and cannot seem to attract a single person. My advertisement reads: St. Mary Magdalene Church needs a Choir Section Leader with a strong voice to lead the choir in hymns and congregation in mass response. We use the 1940 Anglican Hymnal for an Anglican Catholic mass. Playing a musical instrument is not required. Hymns are pre-selected from the litugurical calendar. Hours are 9 -12 on Sunday. Wage negotiable. WHAT am I doing wrong. I have posted this ad with Chapman University, UCI, Cal State Fullereton, Goldenwest College and the Pacific Chorale.

    Please, I'll take any advice.

    I went to undergrad in Pittsburgh. The churches in the city advertised this type of position as a paid "Choral Scholar" position. I'm not sure if this label requires the person employed to do certain tasks, but this title seems more formal and 'resume-worthy' for college students.

    Best to not just send to universities, but to locations that regularly advertise church positions. I would certainly post at the AGO web site at http://www.agohq.org/profession/indexjobs.html, the ACDA web site at http://acda.org/forums/job_board_openengs, and at web sites like www.churchjobs.net.

    Have you considered advertising in local Early Music publications? Just a thought from San Diego.

    Try posting at AGO, NPM (who knows) Diapason, The americanorganist, many others.
    Your difficulty however may be that most qualified musicians with to find a salaried position.

    As a former Anglican, I would love to consider being a cantor at your parish, but for only 3 hours a week, a cross country move may not be likely. Perhaps only advertising locally would be prudent, or making it a 30 hour a week position, LOL
