Men's polyphony
  • We have a group of 20 dedicated men who wish to sing polyphony. About half cannot read music. Help on beginning music selections? Preferrably a capella?
  • See "Anthems for Men's Voices," published by Oxford University Press. although this work includes English anthems, it also includes many polyphonic motets. One volume (green) contains ATB pieces; the other (red) contains TB pieces.

See also the Anthologia vocalis, posted on the musicasacra.com Web site.

    Bruce:

Do any of them sing countertenor?
  • Francis:

I find your question unclear. Who are "they"?

    In my experience:

    1. Most choir "countertenors" are adult males who sing the alto part in falsetto.
    2. In most men and boys' choirs the alto part is sung by such males.
    3. Men who sing the alto part in falsetto turn up in mixed choirs with some frequency.

The red volume serves choirs of men who sing bass and tenor only.

I am sorry. I meant to address doxie. Typed wrong name. (blush)

    They: members of doxie's choir.

Was curious as it would widen repertoire options.

If you are looking for Christmas music for male voices, there is a wonderful set of Carols/anthems by Vaughn-Williams. Published by Oxford.
  • Does anyone know the exact title of the set of carols for men by Vaughn-Williams? and a source for purchase?
