There was an excellent concert—A Choral Requiem—last evening for All Souls at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC sung by the choir of the Basilica under the direction of Dr. Peter Latona.
I lie -- David Lang (sung in Yiddish) Versa est in luctum -- Alonso Lobo Introit; Kyrie eleison (Requiem, Op. 9) -- Maurice Duruflé The Lord is My Shepherd (Op. 91, No. 1) -- Lenox Berkeley Dies Irae (Requiem for My Friend) -- Zbigniew Preisner By Gracious Powers -- Music: Joseph Gelieneau / Text: Dietrich Bonhoeffer Pie Jesu (Requiem, Op. 48) -- Gabriel Fauré Agnus Dei (Mass for Five Voices) -- William Byrd Lux aeterna -- Edward Elgar Nunc Dimittis -- Paweł Łukaszewski Funeral Ikos -- John Tavener Bring Us, O Lord God -- William H. Harris O How Amiable -- Ralph Vaughan-Williams
The Shrine Choir sang the Funeral Ikos very beautifully. A number of us in attendance noted it was better than any recordings we've heard. The same was true of Elgar's Lux aeterna.
