Early Music America article
  • The latest edition of Early Music America has an article by Angela Mariani (host of Harmonia on many public radio stations).

The Pope, Plainchant, and Peaceful Meditation
Angela Mariani analyzes the recent popularity of chant and whether it is a result of Pope Benedict’s interest in historical liturgical music or a reflection of people’s need to cope with a fast-paced world.

Excerpt: “Gregorian chant is appealing because it speaks to the heart, is incredibly expressive and intuitive. This is the ancient ‘soul music’, spirit and heart of Western music, and it connects us with the milieu of our cultural forebears.”

I have not yet received my copy -- this comes from their email promotion -- but I wonder if Angela (I do know her) has spoken to anyone at CMAA? Her conclusions might have changed as a result.
