I'm looking for a great Advent/Christmas processional hymn (Gregorian Chant)
  • Hello!

Can you share with me your favorite Advent/Christmas processional hymn (chant)? I'm looking for one now... Also, if you have a recessional hymn (chant), please share that too! Thank you for your help!

  • Rebekah,

This year I'm going to have a choir learn the Magnificat antiphons better known as the "O Antiphons", to sing during Mass, since around these parts there is the expectation that Veni Emmanuel will be the default hymn for processions and recessions.

These antiphons, which are short, could serve a small church.

Conditor Alme Siderum is quite suitable as a processional or recessional chant.

I've even used Rorate Caeli as a procession.

  • To echo and confirm Chris -

The Advent Prose would be very fittingly sung in procession.
Either in the Latin (Rorate caeli) or the English (Drop Down Ye Heavens) version.

Corde, I love it and so does our choir and congregation.

There's also Jesu Redemptor but it's not really easily "marched" to.

  • For Advent 1, 2, and 4, we sing Creator of the Stars of Night (chant tune creator alme siderum) from Saint Michael Hymnal

I'll echo the Rorate Caeli, especially on the 4th Sunday of Advent. Sadly, I'm more likely to use O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. I'd suggest doing it WITHOUT the pause before "shall come to thee".. It will throw some off, but it sounds better.
