Position: Director, St. Dominic Savio Treble & Advanced Choirs (children) Location: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Lake Ridge, VA Weekly commitment: Sunday mornings, 9:15-10:45AM or 9:15-11:45AM, depending on the week. Duration: September 2017 - April 2018, possibly renewable in September 2018 Compensation: Details are available upon request Description:
Duties primarily include teaching the repertoire for Mass and instructing children in music theory and vocal technique. Some basic keyboard skills are necessary, but a parent often serves as the rehearsal accompanist, and a separate organist plays for Mass when the children sing. There is very little administrative work required, because the Director of Music takes care of selecting music, assembling packets, maintaining the membership roll, and even communication with families, except where the new children's choir director would like to take a few of these duties.
Repertoire consists of hymns (from the Vatican II Hymnal) often with descants, chanted ordinary (thus far the choir has sung ICEL, Missa de Angelis, Richard Rice's Mass of the Sacred Heart, and portions of Fr. Weber's Mass in Honor of St. Thomas More), chanted offertory & communion antiphons (English). A representative music list can be found here: https://rebrand.ly/16OTA2017
Choir membership was around 40 this past year, ranging from 2nd-12th grade. Most of the older children comprise a separate choir which often rehearses and sings separately from the younger children.
If the new children's choir director is a private music instructor (voice, piano, etc.), he or she is also permitted to use church facilities for private lessons (provided the appropriate liability insurance paperwork is registered with the chancery). This person could also (if interested) have the right of refusal for weddings and funerals, second to the regular parish cantor.
