In a choir long ago (but not so far away), for our Christmas concert, we sang the chant Ave Maria and segued immediately into some-composer-of note-whose-name-I cannot-for-the-life-of-me-remember’s Ave Maria based on the chant version. It starts out with the ladies (sopranos, IIRC) singing Ave Maria (just like the chant), and then it splits into gorgeousness.
Anybody know who the composer is? This driving me crazy!
The Jakob Handl/Gallus Ave Maria was for a long time wrongly attributed to Victoria. People here still often refer to it as the (4-part) Victoria Ave Maria (there is another 8-part setting by Victoria is is sublimely beautiful, too).
