Would anyone happen to know, from experience or second-hand, whether the Gradual Psalms (whether prior to Matins or on their own) were ever chanted, and if so, in which mode? Or recto tono? (I'm putting together a booklet for my religious community.)
Stimson, I have typeset these, and I can send you what I've got, if you are interested. Lacking any indications that I could find, I went for the tonus "in directum", and other appropriate tones taken from the Antiphonale Romanum (Kyrie's, versicles, and prayers).
ClemensRomanus: I'd be interested to know why you said recto tono. (And if you've found a rubric somewhere, where?)
Ah my mistake. It seems that according to the Toni communes section of the Antiphonal the correct would be the Tonus in directum. Still, I have a vague recollection of a Priest friend mentioning recto tono, though my memory escapes.
