POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Sacred Ministry is a professional who holds specialized credentials in music and liturgy. The Director of Music as a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and is a leader who possesses the skills and talents to enhance worship through the varied expressions of liturgical music. This individual, with a vision of how a parish can achieve and maintain its potential, is responsible for identifying and communicating the liturgical music needs of the people of St. Daniel the Prophet Parish. The Director of Music will focus on enabling and coordinating liturgical music for the worshiping assembly, vocal ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists, accompanists and others in music ministry.
Effective performance requires that the Director of Music will be: A practicing Catholic. A pastoral, prayerful person committed to personal and professional growth. Ability to speak, read, and cantor in Spanish and English. Competent in communications, interpersonal and relationship "people" skills. Professionally trained and skilled with at least three years experience in music ministry and an accomplished organist, pianist and choral conductor. Knowledgeable in Catholic liturgical practices. Computer competent (e.g., Microsoft Office). Knowledgeable and competent of various styles and forms of church music and the appropriate incorporation of such into liturgy. The Director is a full-time exempt employee as defined by diocesan personnel policies and is directly accountable to the pastor.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS ADMINISTRATION 1. Selects and/or supervises selection and distribution of music for parish liturgies. 2. Plans, researches and selects appropriate music for the choirs/ensembles under his/her personal direction and serves as a resource to those groups not under his/her personal direction. 3. Plans and conducts the rehearsals for the choirs/ensembles under his/her personal direction. 4. Meets with engaged couples to plan music for wedding liturgies. 5. Meets with grieving families as needed to plan music for funeral liturgies. 6. Keeps current the musical guidelines for both wedding and funeral liturgies. 7. Ensures that all copyright regulations are followed regarding music reprinting. 8. Coordinates and publishes (currently) monthly worship programs and worship programs for holy days and funerals as needed. 9. Maintains parish musical instruments and related equipment and sees to their tuning and proper care/service. 10. Maintains a good working relationship with local church musicians and other community resources. 11. Oversees the order and maintenance of the music library. 12. Maintains current musician rosters and other records of individuals involved in the music program. 13. Implements diocesan and parish policies concerning music and liturgy. 14. Recruits, trains and supervises volunteer assistants. 15. Personally accompanies five liturgies per weekend; holy days and other liturgies. 16. Supervises the planning and distribution of schedules for the various musicians, choirs, ensembles and cantors for Sundays and holy days and other liturgies. 17. Other duties as assigned.
TRAINING AND RESOURCES 1. Recruits and encourages the participation of parish members in the music ministry of the parish. 2. Engages additional musicians for special occasions, as needed. 3. Encourages musical and liturgical formation of parish musicians of all ages to improve their skills and musicianship. 4. Strives to build the repertoire of the worshiping assembly and to facilitate their "full and active participation". 5. Is available to all parish organizations to advise them in their musical needs. 6. The Director is strongly encouraged to maintain skills through regular personal practice 7. The Director is also encouraged toward personal and professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars and conventions.
STAFF INVOLVEMENT 1. Is a member of the Pastoral Staff and regularly attends staff meetings. 2. Fosters a spirit of enthusiasm, cooperation and unity among the parish musicians. 3. Collaborates with other staff members to coordinate and provide musical assistance for sacramental celebrations such as 1st Communion, 1st Reconciliation, Confirmation and RCIA Rites.
QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degree in Music or equivalent education OR 3-5 years experience in a parish setting. Excellent organ, keyboard and vocal skills. Comprehensive knowledge of Catholic music and liturgy. Catholic in good standing. Supervisory experience preferred. Experience with establishing and maintaining budgets. Leadership, communication, planning and organizing skills and responsiveness to facilitating the worship life of the parish are required.
