Summer is the time when the music director and I are left to our own devices for service music, and we use this time to learn and explore new pieces for the upcoming choir season. My Wednesday rehearsals now consist of a large stack of music she's picked that I sight read. Sometimes we both decide a few measures in that the piece sucks and we don't like it, or she likes it so much we run through it several times. It's also the time when I build my prelude/postlude rep and spend silly amounts of money on new music. I have to say, while it was always a strong skill for me, my sight reading skills have gone through the roof since I chose to enter the profession of church musician! Anyone else?
Not me. I just finished 4 weeks of vacation, have the entire 2016/2017 year planned, and am going to enjoy a relaxing Summer of practice and organ building.
Summer is my down time with every-other-week rehearsals to learn mostly psalms and Propers. I go over pieces for the next two Sundays with the choir, since we sing the anthems we learned during the rest of the year.
I'm in Winter currently over here but Summer is busier for me because the regular choir go on holiday and I put together a scratch choir for that time. Every week a new set of singers to train up in chant... gah!
With my new parish, its just really "come whenever you want". My director goes solo and her daughter sings, and anyone else who is interested just comes and sings in the choir area.
Its pretty steady for us as well, except currently I am holding my Sight Singing and Note Reading Class which last for 4 or 5 weeks, then we will start a 4 week chant class. So yes, Summer is busy.
It's the status quo in my parish. I never give my schola the summer off and we continue our weekly practices throughout the year. No rest for the weary! I am hopeful that with our new administrator/pastor, that we will be able to sing a monthly TLM, which was discontinued when the priest who celebrated it was transferred to another parish.
