Why the "*" for each page number?

On the other hand in the indices, the page numbers are given with just the Arabic numbers.

Not sure, but the "*" numbers do not exactly accord with pages. For example there is on the second page of music the number 2*-6*. And, following 54*, there are pages 54A*, 54B*, 54C*.

Many of the chants in Cantus Selecti were found as an appendix in (for example) the Antiphonale 1949, these appendix would of course had * page numbers (or similar) I suspect that the original typesetting for this book intended it as an appendix rather than a stand alone book.

CHG, I had never noticed the anomaly of pages 54A*, 54B*, 54C*.

However, I had been intrigued by the inclusion of the Kyrie, fons bonitatis replete with its trope.
