All Saints and All Souls from Saint Peter's: Columbia, South Carolina
  • imageFor All Saints, two back to back Choral Masses with our Gallery Choir and Boys (9 AM) and Girls (11 AM) singing our Missa Brevis adaptation of Gabriel Fauré's Opus 48 with solo violin along with Basil Harwood's "O How Glorious." We had two senior boys at 9 AM and three senior girl choristers at 11 AM join our choral scholars singing Parsons' "Ave Maria." I can die happy. Tomorrow, 8:30 AM and 6:30 PM Masses for All Souls with myself and another male cantor.

  • The alternate tune for 'Love Divine' is nice. I've not encountered this tune before. Hyfrydol is such a glorious tune, too glorious to be spoilt by over use. (Nice, too, is Alleluia, the alternate tune for 'Alleluia, Sing to Jesus' at no. 347 in The 1940.)

Didn't Marty Haugen write Shepherd Me, O God?
  • They all look alike to me.

Congratulations on the beautiful programs and music. I esp. love how you ended with ST CLEMENT, the perfect evening hymn.

  • Thank you- Saint Clement worked even better this morning than I had thought it would: we ended with verse three. Sometimes cutting verses works to your advantage. BLAENWERN caught fire over here after the last British royal wedding: I'm praying the audio files turned out OK. I'm so proud of my church for singing HANOVER and BLAENWERN.

BLAENWERN 87 87 D is a sturdy Welsh tune that seems to be getting some traction recently. It is paired with John Newton's "Glorious Things of You Are Spoken" in the 2006 Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal; with "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" in the 2013 Community of Christ Sings hymnal; and with Kathy Pluth's "He Who Walked upon the Water" in WLP's 2014 One in Faith hymnal.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure I would enjoy the music at these liturgies very much. But I can't help but wonder about singing a parts of a requiem on all Saints Day. I guess I'm wondering if it doesn't somewhat conflate All Saints and All Souls. After all, we're not praying for the saints, right?

Kyrie eleison is kyrie eleison, no matter what music you set it to.

If they sang the requiem introit, THAT would be weird.

I agree. Just as some (or perhaps, many) "all saints"-themed hymns are not good choices for funerals whenever they seem to "canonize" the deceased, so "poor souls"-themed music should not be used on the day the Church celebrates all the saints in glory, not the poor souls in purgatory.

N.B. Traditionally after 2nd Vespers of All Saints, Vespers of the Dead would be chanted. Compline of the Dead could be celebrated straight after Vespers of the Dead of could be
    chanted later.

True, but music does have connotations that affect how we hear the text. I'm not saying "its against the rules" but simply wondering about the message it might convey. Presumably Fauré wrote the music he did for a reason, and that reason had something to do with it being sung in the context of a requiem.
  • FBC- Your point is well taken, and I respectfully disagree. Fauré's "Requiem" is simply too valuable as a pedagogical instrument in treble choirs, it's also one of those cultural bulwarks that I feel Catholics should bastion with pride. I think repurposing it as a Missa Brevis makes it much more accessible to choirs and congregations alike throughout the liturgical year. I've posted the playlist back on the main posting, so you can hear what we did and then hate it more fully. :)

I'm really not trying to be a jerk about this, but you have got me wondering. Presumably there are limits to this, right? You wouldn't program Fauré's requiem for Easter, I presume. I guess I tend to think that All Saints is a lot closer to Easter than to All Souls.

My parish commemorates the faithful departed in a special way all throughout November (I guess it's a kind of pre-advent), so I would incline toward keeping requiem music for the other Sundays in November.

I thought there was a no no rule about using the litany of saints on All Saints. Anybody know?

I've never heard that before. A parish north of us did and they are quite by-the-book.
  • Fcb: you don't seem to be breaking a sweat. Seriously, you raise a very good point. I suppose there are some who can't help but "see dead people" when strains of certain Requiems are heard. I would do the Sanctus from Fauré's, or Duruflé's Requiems as a grand choral Sanctus (even Rutter's). But the protestant practice of offering a choral requiem on Palm Sunday, or singing Pie Jesu on Ash Wednesday....no. just. Stop.

What minimal research I've done seems to indicate that as an option four the litany is best programmed at Offertory. It also seems quite a shame to sequester it only for the Easter Vigil.
