I wonder what that's like? Is one more prominent or busier than the other, or are their duties very different? Wonder if they cooperate with each other? Who plays for the Christmas/Easter liturgies, or the outdoor Masses, etc.
I do not understand. Saint Peter Basilica and Sistine Chapel are different buildings. Each has its own schedule and choir and organ, so why not separate organists?
"Consider...the acoustical nightmare that is the basilica..."
When the choir of New College, Oxford sang there a few months ago, they sang a hair-raising anthem composed by Matthew Martin. The organ was involved, and I expected to hear a muddled mess in that huge space, but it all held together well, The reeds of the organ were badly out of tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlZvjZ6kBxI
