The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, CA, seeks a professional soprano for the semi-professional Cathedral Choir. The Cathedral is located on the shore of beautiful Lake Merritt, in the Uptown district of Oakland, and walking distance from 19th Street BART station.
This position is ideal for sacred-/early music enthusiasts, as the schola cantorum (section leaders) often sing polyphony by themselves as a group. Dedication, commitment, and leadership skills are equally important as exceptional sight-singing ability and the ability to sing pure tone (straight tone). The ideal candidate would be accustomed to making music at a high level and be thoroughly trained in the vocal arts, having earned at least a Bachelor’s in Music/Voice.
Auditions will continue until the position is filled. The audition will include a rendering of an early music aria of the applicant’s choice, sight-singing of Gregorian chant, and sight-singing of a renaissance Mass.
Choir rehearsals are Thursday evenings and Sunday morning Mass commitments. Extra compensation for Diocesan events as well as additional cantor opportunities.
Competitive stipend.
