The 1974 Graduale Romanum and the GIRM
  • My question is this: does De Ritibus Servandis from the GR get superseded by the GIRM due to date of publication? If not, it would seem that we have conflicting instructions for music at Mass: the GR clearly directing the chant of the Proper, and the GIRM seemingly allowing whatever floats your boat.

That would be how I'd read it.

One would think that GIRM has more 'force' than the GR's instructions. And yes, it's confusing.

BTW, ever try to find all the propers of the upcoming Ember Friday in the '74 GR?

At best, the GR had force for Masses celebrated in Latin.
  • I would say the “de ritibus servandis” section was written by a rather different group than wrote the GIRM, with a different set of priorities in play.

I personally read the “de ritibus” section as “how to use this book” rather than a general guide to music in the Mass.
