Different Readings Listed in the Gregorian Missal and the Lectionary

    I was browsing the Gregorian Missal. Different Scripture passages are cited in there than in the Lectionary. How did the differences come about? Admittedly I am an ignorant amateur church musician without any professional training in the field. Please enlighten, or point me to the right sources for further reading.

    The Lectionary for the US was updated in 1998. I suspect the Gregorian Missal is not a precise concordance to such a specific edition of the Lectionary.

    Does one have a choice when the two sources differ, or does the Lectionary take precedent?
