For anyone who is a fan of the Anglican choral tradition, but really anyone who is for all that is good in church music, perhaps the best practitioner of our art, John Scott, passed away today too young. There is more information below at the St. Thomas website, but also (for those of you on Facebook) a beautiful tribute by his former associate and my friend Fred Teardo.
I like to think there are some that are saved by their meticulous and devoted "work", professionally speaking, and apostolate of beauty. If that is indeed the case, then I would think John will, now or soon, look down upon us!
I had not heard. Your announcement hit me like a thunderbolt. May John Scott and all the faithful departed rest in peace; and may light perpetual shine upon them. I like to think that the profound love of the praises of God which he and many others have makes up for what they may or may not have had of magisterial orthodoxy resident within them.
I am stunned! I too was a student of Sir George Guest but did not know John Scott except only through his great work and email correspondence between us. He will be greatly missed! RIP
I am familiar with his great work at St. Paul's, and I had hoped to visit St. Thomas' when I was in NYC earlier this summer, but never managed it. Very sad news, indeed. Requiescat in Pace.
