The Cathedral Choir at the Cathedral of Saint Paul is in need of section leaders. Due to some modest expansion, the cathedral is hiring 1 alto, 1 tenor, and 1 bass/baritone section leader.

The Cathedral Choir sings weekly on Sundays and for various holy days from August-June, presenting the Gregorian chant repertoire, sacred polyphony, and other appropriate liturgical music. A successful section leader candidate should:

 Have solid musicianship: superior sight-singing abilities, always secure in one’s part;
 Be dependable and possess a professional manner; ability to collaborate as well as listen;
 Possess a focused, forward, yet rich tone; model diction, tone, and color for the section;
 Be able to adapt vocally to repertoire from chant/Renaissance polyphony to Romantic and 21st Century works; understand context of individual part/voices in choral texture;
 Be familiar with (or willing to learn) Gregorian chant notation and solfège;
 Be present for one weekly rehearsal on Wednesday (6:30-8:30PM) and one Sunday service (10AM-end of 11AM Mass) as well as during Christmas Season (esp. Dec. 24-25) and Holy Week/Easter. The choral season extends from late August until June, allowing for a summer break ideal for students.

The Cathedral of St. Paul is the mother church of the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama, serving Roman Catholics and the entire community of Central and Northern Alabama. The church is ideal for choral music, possessing nearly six seconds of reverb. As the cathedral church of the diocese, the Cathedral Choir is tasked with presenting the “treasury of sacred music” in its intended liturgical context. As such, excellence is expected of section leaders and stipends are competitive with the highest in the area.
