Sunday Lectionary in Chant Notation

I am considering putting the Sunday Lectionary Readings to Chant Notation. I have several problems I need to overcome
    1. What chant notation software is to there to use?
    2. Learning to use said software
    3. Getting permission from the USCCB if I want to do more than use it for personal use.

Is this something that others would be interested in, or is the whole thing so simple that a book isn't needed?

    1. Gregorio
    2. http://home.gna.org/gregorio/ AND http://dev.illuminarepublications.com/gregorio/
    3. Others have done it. Just send them a note and ask.
    4. I suspect that both are true. (It is so simple that it shouldn't be needed, and yet it will still be very helpful.)

FWIW, I know several seminarians who would love an inexpensive book of notated Sunday readings and Gospels.

CMAA offers a book of notated Gospels (Ordinary Form, US Lectionary):

I get confused on the Gregorio page about how to download. I gather that I need to download MacTex, Xcode, ant several other programs to get Gregorio to work. Or am I misreading the instructions?

chonak, I am mainly interested doing the 1st & 2nd readings (besides being a member of the choir, I'm a lector at my Church)

Use the Illuminare link Adam provided. It's much easier and probably more suited to your purposes.
  • Strange effects on illuminare's site trying to get a simple podatus... hmmm
  • (c4)HO-(g)lo-(fg)causts(g)

Look at what happens on the second syallable 'fg' podatus... weird, very weird.

The podatus "fg" doesn't render correctly on the GUI, but it's correct in the PDF. This has been a problem that others have noticed before.

Ah, that. The preview GUI does not use the same rendering engine as the final PDF, so there is no guarantee they will match. It is really only there to help in the composition/transcribing, not to give a final output preview.

@bhcordova, Gregorio is a bother to install because it requires various other software installations as prerequisites. Also, to use gregorio in complex documents, you'd need to learn to use the very old-school typesetting system "TeX".

If you are just starting out, it's easier to use the web interfaces available:
http://illuminarepublications.com/gregorio (newer and with a neat on-screen editor)
http://gregorio.gabrielmass.com/ (my original one, with helpful links to a tutorial and other documentation)

With those you can download the output of Gregorio as a PDF file for each score, then use your own favorite document software to arrange things further.

Also, a documentation hub for Gregorio is at http://gregoriochant.org/

@chonak, I know what you mean about it being a bother. I spent 2 hrs. Tuesday and an hour last night installing the various software and I still don't know if I've done it right.

Ok, on the Illuminare Score Editor, how do you start a new line?

Z or z after any note. One stretches the line, the other stops it immediately.

If anybody needs help with TeX, don't hesitate to ask. As a physicist I am quite fluent in using LaTeX, and I have some experience in GregorioTeX.
