Don't overlook Alain's very early Ballade in the Phrygian Mode, an admirably poetic miniature which, fortunately, was included in the first collected edition of JA's organ sheet-music (as well as in the much newer and more scholarly one). I've played it several times as an offertory and it seems to suit several different instruments:
The last time I played a twentieth century French piece, the older ladies in the congregation mobbed me after mass. They said to never play it again and stick to things that are pretty. LOL. Now I play them at home on the mighty Rodgers.
