We use the Mass of Our Lady Help of Christians (CNP), Mass of Grace (WLP), and Mass for Christian Unity (WLP). Just wondering if anyone else uses these Masses?
If there are those who are looking to move away from Vermulst and some of the other hot-off-the-press masses by new composers for their choirs, I recommend 2 accessible masses by Jean Langlais:
"Missa in Simplicitate" (1953) (unison voices -- publ. by Schola Cantorum)
"Missa Misericordiae Domini" (1959) (ST(A)B voices -- publ. Carus) This mass was composed for the Boys Town Choir, Omaha, NE in 1958. There's a great deal of unison singing split over the 3 parts, and some STB singing, which is not difficult.
A large organ isn't required for either of these masses. Most of Langlais' registrations are listed as 8' or 8', 4' flutes or principals. An occasional mixture and/ or reeds is suggested for the ends of the "Gloria" and "Sanctus" of each mass. Neither are the accompaniments difficult for the organist...very accessible.
No. It is a very old mass. In fact, it was one of the very first English masses after the change from Latin. It is by Jan Vermulst, and published by World Library.
