Since Little Joe Adam Wood, free thinkin', free floatin', genius raconteur has relocated to the calm solicitude of Berkeley California, or thereabouts, and now 'n' then regales us with his exploits in the East Bay, inquiring minds want to know: Where's Adam been goin' to Mass, to church, to mosque, synagogue or atheist temples in the hotbed of liturgy that is SF/Oakland/San Jose/Marin? 'Fess up, AW!
I have refrained from making any comments as to my liturgical sight-seeing, in part because it seems at least possible that I might one day be seeking employment (or already attained it) in one of these communities, and I would hate to have to deal with the fallout from someone Googling my name and finding me complaining about how awful their church is.
Three liturgies I have attended at locations highly unlikely to hire me:
The Catholic Cathedral of Christ the Light, in Oakland Stellar choral singing. Excellent music program. I could use more consonants, and less microphone.
The Episcopal Church of St. Gregory of Nyssa, San Francisco If Disney World's Animal Kingdom decided to a do a show inspired by Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy, it would look precisely like this. I enjoyed myself.
Orthodox Divine Liturgy at the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute I have never felt so personally not-required at a liturgy. I mean that in a good way.
