Here is a good review of a new book on the history of musical notation. Subscription, alas, required, but I am sure you can track down good reviews elsewhere.
I revere that book, and wrote a very enthusiastic review of it which was published some time back in Australia's Limelight magazine (said review doesn't seem to be available online thus far). Professor Kelly's vigorous and often amusing prose taught me a great deal about early notation which I had never even suspected, let alone appreciated, beforehand.
