Norway: Sing all the hymns

NRK TV in Norway is known for its marathon productions showing live events in real time, a form called "slow TV". Past programs have included a live show of a woman knitting a sweater (preceded by a sheep-shearing and wool-spinning); the burning of logs in a fireplace; a five-day ferry-trip up Norway's coast, and cross-country train rides.
Today they are in the midst of a three-day performance in which about 200 choirs are taking turns singing the entire contents of the standard "psalm book". In "Psalm Book Minute By Minute". The program is scheduled to run through all of Sunday, Nov. 30 (local time).

"Psalm book" is not a correct translation/meaning of "Salmeboka" in this context - it should be "Hymn book" or "Hymnal."

The singing has been of generally very high quality, ofttimes inspired. At the moment they have just finished Hymn No. 806.

That happened. The whole thing can be watched again in 33 two-hour episodes. I've only watched a tiny fraction of it, but there's some good stuff. I recommend the performances by the trio Sursum Corda.Thanked by 1CHGiffen

I'm just suggesting that a "standard hymnal" has many argument against it... such as CBWIII. I'm pretty sure a "National Hymnal" of the USA would look quite a bit like it.

By standard hymnal, I meant a single hymnal for American Catholics, not a pastiche of different hymnals or songbooks or music issues that we have to deal with now, nor a "national hymnal." The Episcopalians came closest to something like that with The Hymnal 1940.

In the German-speaking areas of Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and South Tyrol [now part of Italy]) we have a standard hymnal for Catholics. It contains about 700 numbers of common repertoire (not all of it hymns or psalms, because it is also meant as a prayerbook and contains texts about the sacraments, examinations of conscience etc.) and a diocesan appendix of about 100 hymns. It is a mixture of contemporary and traditional hymns (and that means going back to the 13th century, since the Easter hymn "Christ ist erstanden" is the oldest hymn in the German language known), a few chant ordinaries and simplex Allelujas, antiphons and psalms.
