    Anybody know anything about the music that has been going on in this Cathedral?
    Do they have a paid choir?

    All I know is that the director of the dedication, Mark Sullivan, is a DM at another parish who led choristers assembled from throughout parishes in the diocese for a number of opening liturgies. In speaking with Mark and his sister Janet Sullivan-Whitaker (another DM in Piedmont/Oakland) they both inferred that the search would be national and take its time.
    When I worked at the former cathedral in the mid-70's, the choir was all volunteer; director, organist and weekly instrumentalists were paid. But that was another life ago.

    The Cathedral is highly involved in ethnic liturgies, and I think that it woudl be a great opportunity....Latin would be useful to not give preference to any of the communites that worship there.

    I read in Today’s Liturgy where JS-W says they rehearsed only a few Mondays to dedicate the thing.

    Here in Houston we spent about 4 months rehearsing, about twice a month, if I recall correctly.

    I guess the disparity isn’t that great (4-ish rehearsals versus 8-ish), but on the surface, “Mondays for a month” sounds like a lot less rehearsal than we put into our new cathedral dedication.

    Anyone have a music list from that dedication? I would be curious to see it.

    I am almost positive that Fr Keyes, of http://gasparian.stblogs.org/ wrote the psalm that was used at the dedication Mass.
    His site might have the program.

    The only selection that causes my eyebrows to arch is of Psalm 95 for the responsorial. Psalm 19:8-10 and 15 is required, as is the antiphon, "Your words, Lord, are spirit and life."

    My eyebrows also arched over the Apostolic Blessing with a Plenary Indulgence. This is gilding the lily: A plenary indulgence is attached to participation in the entire rite.

    This may not go over well here, but I'm glad to see that Sullivan-Whitaker's "Here at this table" was not consigned as a "Gathering Song" as its publisher has maintained since day one.

    Cathedral Music Minister Hired

    Cathedral Provost Fr. Paul Minnihan announces that Rudy de Vos has been hired as Director of Music Ministry for the Cathedral. Mr. de Vos is an accomplished pianist, organist and choirmaster and has appeared in concert around the world. His most recent position was Director of Music and Organist at St. Anne Church in Rochester, New York. He will begin his new role in Oakland on August 1.

    Yes. But over dinner Fr. Keyes remarked amusingly that what was commonly known in certain circles, still had to wait for publication. Certain protocols had to be completed that were necessary before that date.
