My son, our parish organist, and I have offered to conduct a very small youth orchestra and chorale for our Christmas Eve Mass. The orchestra will present a program prior to Mass. We just got approval for this so the announcement will not even appear until October 19, ergo, I am not expecting many participants when we begin rehearsals the first week of November. We will have my children (trumpet and viola), perhaps a couple of violins, not sure what else. Could someone recommend some music that would be appropriate for such a group? I'd love to find something that could incorporate, the strings, trumpet and organ, not necessarily simultaneously but somehow all incorporated into the piece(s).Thanks!
Have you looked at "http://imslp.org/"? I would search for Christmas carols and see what comes up. You may be able to mix and match scores, or use something for a string quartet and add a trumpet descant while your son fills in the figured bass.
