I was unfamiliar with this, which is now apparently an old story, but this composer decided to write a parody of praise songs...and it got picked up as a praise song; even became wildly popular. He now refuses to do it even as a joke. He even took down his own blog post explaining why the whole thing kind of saddened him.
I never knew it was intended to be a joke or parody. I heard it years ago on our local Christian station; I never thought it was for any type of service or anything formal, but intended for the radio.
I'm sure plenty of people took it at face value, but it wouldn't surprise me if some P&W music directors got it, then programmed it to see if anyone would notice. It's not like something like that hasn't happened throughout history.
