My wife Kari just got home from teaching piano lessons and one of her students let her know about this resource. Does any one use it or have an opinion about it?
IMSLP is a great resource, I've never seen CD Sheet Music Online, but for 20$ it's an easy way for me to get my, for example, clarinet students to have the basics- methods I would definitely use and excerpts I could use in lessons. It would be nice to have it all in ipad format like pdf, which IMSLP is nice for also, although I've always taught with paper for easy markup.
It is a great resource for private teachers to print off a page at a time for their students to start working on something before having them invest in a book or anthology. Asking students to buy several books can be a turn off for parents who are struggling to pay the lesson fee. I have mostly taught voice lessons and the collection of vocal exercises is excellent. While some of the exercises are reprinted and currently available most of them are not. I haven't had time to cross reference IMSLP to see if everything available on CD Sheet music is also online. As students get more advanced and serious about their studies, then they can invest in printed editions (which are under copyright) for the benefits that they offer.
And with regard to copyright, printing something off of CD sheet music or IMSLP is perfectly legal, whereas photocopying something out of a printed book is typically illegal.
