Out of curiosity, how appropriate is this hymn for the Ascension? I've seen many churches program this both on Easter and for the Ascension but I'm wondering if the text fits both.
But a hymn is a hymn, especially a "good hymn" with suitable music and good text; and ALL of Easter IS an extension of Easter Sunday, so I'm not sure I could say that it's NOT appropriate.
I think that Easter itself is the obvious focus of this hymn. It is about Christ's victory over the grave and his 'rising' to life from death. While I would never have thought about this hymn as appropriate for Ascension, I suppose one could, in an oblique exercise, interpret that he has 'risen' into heaven. A sober look at the entire text, though, would reveal that its 'proper' use is Easter Day and, perhaps, a few Sundays of Eastertide. Ascension, while within Eastertide, has a different focus and theme; and, there are many fine Ascension hymns that one should want not to omit (one of my favourites being 'The Head That Once Was Crowned With Thorns').
Eastertide has different phases in the OF. The first 3 Sundays (especially the Octave) are oriented to the first appearances of the risen Lord. Music oriented to Easter Day can be quite fitting for all of those Sundays. Easter 4 is Good Shepherd Sunday, and a thematic pivot to the next 3 Sundays, which are oriented towards the fulfillment of the Paschal Mystery. Finally, there is the pre-Pentecost novena (or octave, cough, cough).
Matthew, that is exactly what I'd like to do with our Choristers. Might you know where to locate that in PDF? I know I can do it on my own, but time being what it is...
