Assistant Organist-Cathedral of St. Paul, Birmingham, Alabama
The Cathedral of St. Paul seeks a quarter-time Assistant Organist. The applicant should possess excellent keyboard and interpersonal skills, as well as a desire to provide the highest quality accompanying, hymn-playing, and solo organ repertoire at liturgies. Chief responsibilities include playing for at least one Sunday Mass (weekly), Wednesday choir rehearsal (weekly), management of music program/playing all liturgies during the Director of Music's vacation/study leave, and Holy Day Masses and other liturgies as needed. Occasional opportunities for weddings and special liturgies for additional stipends. The applicant should also possess excellent sight-reading skills, ability to improvise in the context of the liturgy, as well as familiarity with (or a desire to learn) accompaniment of Gregorian chant from its original notation. The cathedral great organ is a 1985 Moller 4m/55rks in an exceptional acoustic. This position will provide the Assistant Organist with an excellent opportunity to perform organ literature and accompany choral repertoire from the Medieval period to the 21st Century. Salary according to AGO guidelines for 1/4 time position.
