History behind Agnus Dei's use of peccata (instead of peccatum)

    Does anyone have information above and beyond what the Catholic Encyclopedia says about the use of the plural peccata (perhaps a reference to 1 John 2:2) instead of the singular peccatum (attested to in John 1:29) in the Agnus Dei?
