Some musicians cannot yet read chant notation. This is a problem - they should learn. But what can they do to improve sacred music in their parishes until they do learn? Use great chant that has been arranged in modern notation!

Adam Bartlett has begun publishing accompaniments of the chants of the Lumen Christi Missal and Gradual. Though these are intended for organists accompanying the chant, they could also be used by vocalists who cannot read neumes yet. They are also handy if you have student-organists who cannot just look at neumes and improvise accompaniments.

If you, or your parish music director, can execute the Psalms found in Respond and Acclaim, you/they can execute the Entrance Chant, Psalm, Alleluia, Offertory and Communion Chants from the Lumen Christi series.

The future is now. It's time to look beyond the Simple English Propers to vernacular chants that are specifically written with the text being sung in mind.
