funeral propers
  • We have a funeral Mass coming up on Wednesday; I am wondering about the offertory and communion antiphons. We normally do these for Sunday Masses along with congregational hymns. We will have the usual 4-hymn sandwich for the funeral with OCP Psalm and Gospel acclamation. Do you all add the offertory and communion antiphons as well? I'm anticipating little congregational singing participation so it will be my little family "choir" carrying the music for the Mass.

This does not directly answer your question, but perhaps the second hymn text on this page would be helpful in bringing (at least a reference to) the Propers into your hymn paradigm.

Here's the setting of Adam's text to Eisenach.
Also attached is an MP3 sound file of this harmonization.

  • I found the SEP funeral propers so I think we'll work on those. Fortunately the family has given us free reign in selecting the music (except for a grandchild playing the accordion during the time for eulogies--not sure how that's going to work).

It seems there's no organ accompaniment for the SEP offertory (if there is, could someone please direct me to it?), so do you think the 2nd hymn above would work for the offertory with just the choir, omitting the congregational hymn at that point? (I can't imagine anyone in the congregation would mind.)

    Beer Barrel Polka.
  • I would post a question on this thread about the Organ Accompaniment: http://forum.musicasacra.com/forum/discussion/7825/sep-accompaniment-book/p2

I'm sure he's done it, it just might not be engraved yet.
  • THANK YOU Adam and CH for that beautiful hymn. We sang it for the offertory at the funeral today--perfect! And what's more, the accordion player didn't show and there were no eulogies--it was a lovely funeral.

Update on my setting of Adam's hymn to my harmonization of EISENACH. I finally got around to posting here at CPDL, but not before making a few minor changes. I'm attaching the new PDF score and MP3 sound file here for your convenience (the MP3 at CPDL has higher fidelity, though).

Many thanks teachermom for using the hymn.

That hymn is also perfect for All Soul's Day

The link you give is to a previous version (linked to earlier in this thread, in fact). Hoever, I uploaded the (better) revised version just 3 posts above this one.
