Director of Sacred Music & Organist – Full-Time Position, Christ the King Catholic Church, Omaha, NE
  • Christ the King Church is a thriving parish and school that is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the Director of Sacred Music. The candidate first and foremost should be a practicing Catholic, have strong proficiency in organ, conducting, and singing; experience working with children and children’s choirs desirable, especially experience with the Ward method; have knowledge and understanding of the Church’s documents on sacred music (from Tra le Sollecitudini until the present day); be willing to foster and cultivate true sacred music yet simultaneously be respectful toward and open to contemporary hymnody; familiarity with and appreciation of chant; and possess a strong desire to work with the pastor to continue the parish’s mission of making the Mass faithful, prayerful, and beautiful.

    The Director of Sacred Music collaborates greatly with the pastor and school music teacher. The pastor is greatly desirous of building up strong children’s choirs program and enhancing adult choirs, especially in the realm of sacred music. The Director of Sacred Music plays organ at our parish Masses; rehearses with and directs the choirs, scholas and cantors; makes schedules; manages our musical library; enlists accompanists, when necessary; assists couples and families in planning their wedding and funeral Masses, respectively, plays organ for our school Masses.
    Instruments currently used in our liturgies are predominantly organ with some piano. Christ the King has a Reuter organ and an expansive choir loft. Occasionally, strings and brass have been incorporated. We currently subscribe to OCP for missals and missalettes in the pews, but are open to other, more traditional hymnals.

    • Education: Degrees in organ and/or sacred music preferred; BA/BM or equivalent experience required; MA preferred
    • Salary: Negotiable
    • Benefits: Coverage for medical, dental and vision; 401k; additional stipends from parish weddings and funerals
    • Days off: Mondays and Tuesdays (though some flexibility is required in moving days off or hours in the cases of solemnities, etc., falling on these days, e.g., Christmas, etc.).
    • Number of weekend Masses: 4 (Saturday 5 p.m. Vigil; Sunday 10 a.m., 12 noon, and 5 p.m.)
    • Number of weekday Masses: 3 (W-F regular school Masses, while in session)
    • Primary Masses on Holy Days of Obligations, parish ritual Masses, and essential solemnities and feasts (Christmas, Triduum, Confirmation, First Communion, Solemnity of St. Joseph, graduation Mass, etc.)
    • Current number of weekly rehearsals: 4 (with the exception of summer)
    • Ensembles: Adult choir; Funeral Choir; Little Kings Choir (children); assistance with the School Choir for school Masses. Open to expansion.

    Christ the King Parish was founded in June of 1953. Her five-day school began in 1954 and continues to inspire Catholic excellence in its students to this day. The parish finished the construction of her permanent church in 1961. Seating 1,100 people, the church drew international architectural notice for its unique design and stained glass windows that surround the entire perimeter of the building. Christ the King has a storied history and is a well-regarded parish, filled with faithful and lifelong members. Her pastor and people seek to live out the new evangelization through the reclamation and promulgation of divine beauty in worship and hospitality and community through the formation of youth and especially of adults in prayer, truth and charity. Christ the King Parish currently serves 1,342 registered households.
