I'd love your opinions on Cappella Romana. Some of their albums have been exceedingly important to me. I love the Lost Voices of Hagia Sophia, where they reconstructed via a super long process the exact acoustics of the Hagia Sophia and recorded super early Byzantine chants from the time period in that acoustic. Their St. Catherine's Vespers is likewise incredible, as is the chants from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Below is the interview I did with Dr. Alexander Lingas, the founding director of the ensemble, who just recently retired.

https://youtu.be/uCgnEWpJwc0?si=WUicMR0HhoG4kBv2

Hi all (my dear MusicaSacra friends, colleagues, brothers and sisters in Christ.)

OK… It’s been 20 wonderful years collaborating with like minded musical Catholics from when I was first invited by (Fr Skeris?) to join the gathering in 2005 at CUA. I think there were 47 “closet RC pro musicians” at that conference including Jeffrey, Bill, (perhaps William, but I’m not sure) definitely Curt, because I remember him intoning the “Alleluia”. Arlene was there. I think I was asked to intone something for Vespers… It might’ve been the Marian antiphon. I remember the Mass that we were celebrating at the Franciscan Monastery and I was singing countertenor next to Jeff who turned and gave me “a look.”

Anyway, I composed this in 2009 when I was DoM in Wyoming. It was the music prior to Midnight Mass, and I employed a string trio who premiered this piece with me. Maybe it was cello and violin… cant recall… but I sent this to public radio yesterday as a Christmas gift for the air waves…

It’s got a little bit of Debussy, Mozart and, of course, Bach, influences. I am sorry I dont have a REAL piano on which to practice and record. But nonetheless, it’s the black and white notes that count.

Love to all!

Have a very blessed and merry Christmas!

Francis

Hardcore audiophiles, .wav

The Latin Mass chaplaincy is wonderful... they have a daily EF low Mass--or two--and a two EF Masses, one silent, one sung, on holy days. Can't make a Sunday high mass since I'll be in Divine Liturgy but feasts I can and will go to.)

I have decided that I can't get enough of the Dies Irae.

Can you please direct me to recordings of all the different beautiful, wonderful arrangements thereof? I am willing to buy whole CDs of the Requiem Mass and/or sacred music in general if they come highly recommended. I would also like free recordings, if they exist.
The Gloria of Missa II: Kyrie, fons bonitatis, sung by the Oratory Singers for the Feast of St. Philip Neri, 2023.

This was being sung in a way to invite the congregation to attempt their alternations, but that stands on its own without them, since it is still somewhat new.

This is perhaps my very favorite piece of plainchant. It seems to contain so much of the human heart and raise it to God, and I'm very pleased with how we sang it.

Hopefully our Lord was, too.

Hi All

Here is an album of Christmas music I arranged using a Kawai K-1 Synth in 1990 or so. I created the patches with the wavetable controls and then routed them to 8 MIDI channels... the entire album played from MOTU Performer onto a DAT Master and duplicated on cassette. It was mostly improvised into a sequencer (played all the parts in real time WITHOUT a metronome to achieve rubato, diminuendos, etc). I apologize for the cheesy sounds, but it is the arrangements that cook!

About the K1
https://www.vintagesynth.com/kawai/kawaik1.php

Album Cover
http://www.myopus.com/preview/nativity

Downloadable mp3
http://www.myopus.com/preview/nativity/nativity2022.mp3

Merry Christmas to you all, and to all a good night!
