The Catholic Institute of Sacred Music is delighted to announce the summer 2026 launch of its summer-based 36-credit Master of Sacred Music degree, and two 20-credit Post-Baccalaureate Certificates in Gregorian Chant and Sacred Choral Music, pending approval from WSCUC. Applications open November 18th, 2025.

https://catholicinstituteofsacredmusic.org/graduate-study/

The MSM and Certificates are completable in three to five summers, depending on how many weeks you can be on campus during the summer. During the regular fall and spring semesters, you'll work with a voice teacher in your area, and take a 1-hour online (live via Zoom) colloquium with other graduate students.

Our affordable tuition ($250 per credit hour) and compact format mean that you can keep your job at a parish or school while completing graduate studies.

Courses will also remain open to students wishing just to take a graduate class or two, without matriculating into a degree/certificate program.

Check out this summer's classes here: https://catholicinstituteofsacredmusic.org/summer-courses/.

Our curriculum prepares you with the theological, philosophical, and historical knowledge—as well as the practical skills (singing, playing, conducting, teaching, composing, organizing, fundraising)—necessary to build excellent sacred music programs in parishes and schools.

Our world-class faculty of dedicated Catholic scholars and practitioners delivers a curriculum that is robust, and focused on musical excellence and fidelity to the Catholic faith and tradition. Summer classes are buttressed by an horarium that allows time for sung daily Mass and vespers, access to confessions, and time for private prayer, study, relaxation, and fellowship.
Interested in learning more?

We have two digital open houses upcoming. Sign up here to learn more.

Summer 2026 Courses:
- History and Principles of Sacred Music
- Advanced Seminar in Gregorian Chant: Manuscript Sources, Semiology, and Interpretation
- Advanced Seminar in Gregorian Chant: Vocal Technique and Semiological Performance Practice
- Teaching Gregorian Chant to Children
- Liturgical Theology
- Introduction to Gregorian Chant
- Organ Accompaniment of Chant
- Choral Institute
- Composition Seminar
- Organ Improvisation
- Choral Preparation: Choral Conducting, Rehearsal Techniques, and Group Vocal Pedagogy
- Advanced Seminar in Gregorian Chant: Notation and Practice in the Tenth through Fourteenth Centuries
- Advanced Seminar in Gregorian Chant: Cantare super librum

Program faculty:
- Dr. Jennifer Donelson-Nowicka, Music History and Gregorian Chant
- Prof. Christopher Berry, Choral Music and Organ
- Dr. Frank La Rocca, Composition
- Dr. Charles Weaver, Gregorian Chant
- Dr. Alison Altstatt, Gregorian Chant
- Prof. Sandra Raquel Bengochea, Vocal Pedagogy
- Dr. Joseph Dyer, Gregorian and Old Roman Chant
- Dr. Rosemary Heredos, Gregorian Chant
- Fr.
Readers here will probably recall that in October 2024 Bishop McKnight of Jefferson City issued a decree banning a small number of songs at Mass in the diocese and recommending a few Mass settings be sung in every parish for the sake of unity.

The bishop very quickly rescinded that decree after outcry from some of the faithful.

The diocese recently announced scheduled listening sessions as part of a consultative process that will culminate in a new decree that takes input from the listening sessions into account.

This link has the story. Be sure to click on the related links at the top of the story too:

https://catholicmissourianonline.com/stories/exploring-power-of-sacred-music-in-the-liturgy,5761

It seems the listening sessions will be structured as catechetical opportunities to educate people about what liturgical/sacred music is and isn't, which should help frame and constrain the conversations about music at Mass. This could be a good thing. So many Catholics believe OCP Breaking Bread music just is what liturgical music is, and they believe that musical style is a matter of indifference for music at Mass.

OCP feeling the heat

Hahahaha. OCP published an explanation of their song review process, probably in direct response to the recent news about some of their songs being banned in one diocese.

https://www.ocp.org/en-us/blog/entry/what-is-ocps-song-review-process

But OCP's explanation is both contradictory and equivocal.

OCP claims that it has a thorough vetting process such that you can trust that any song in its hymnals or missals is appropriate for Catholic worship. Later, it says that if any song is found to be unsuitable, it is revised or removed. They provide examples. Well, if songs later have to be removed, then OCP's vetting process isn't as thorough as they claim, is it?

OCP also equivocates regarding the approval its resources receive from the USCCB. The approval OCP receives solely concerns the official liturgical texts (reproduced contents of the lectionary and the Roman Missal) in the missal/hymnal combos. The approval does NOT extend to the liturgical music included in the missal/hymnal combo, yet OCP deceptively implies that the approval includes and pertains to the musical contents of the pew missal/hymnal combos by saying, "Again, OCP’s missals and hymnals are all reviewed, approved by the USCCB and published with ecclesiastical approval.... You can have confidence that any song in OCP’s USCCB-approved missals and hymnals is theologically sound and appropriate for use in the liturgy."

Hahahahaha. Kill the OCP. OCP is harming the Church with its pseudo-liturgical music.

OCP must be feeling some heat to have published that explanation. I think and hope that heat will be turned up as new bishops and pastors have the courage to replace parish OCP resources with alternatives, of which there are several better options.

He previously served as sacred music director at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Charlotte and was responsible in particular for promoting traditional Catholic music in the Diocese of Charlotte.
“He transformed our young men’s lives,” said Father Matthew Kauth, rector of St. Joseph College Seminary. “When we first started the seminary, before Tom got involved, we couldn’t really hold a single tune. It was like two dozen different voices. But Tom’s rare talent and his passion for music really opened our seminarians eyes to the massively large and beautiful world of music.
“He was not just teaching sacred music, I mean we were doing barbershop quartets and whole range of things. To have lost him is like losing a family member,” Kauth continued. “Everyone wanted Tom or any possible musical challenge or setting, and Tom would pull it off.
“The legacy of his music and passion certainly will inspire our young men, but Tom is absolutely irreplaceable,” Kauth said.
Please pray for the happy repose of his soul, and for his beloved wife Deborah and their family and friends. We will share the funeral arrangements once they have been finalized.
Watch Thomas Savoy and Luke Thierfelder, tenor, play a selection of sacred music during the 2022 Eucharistic Congress: https://youtu.be/hE9pca9lvtQ
Read more about his work: https://www.savoymusichouse.com/thomas-f-savoy.html

Say a prayer for his soul and his family.
As in prior years, we will be singing all liturgical parts of the Old Holy Week this year in York, PA, at Ss. Peter and Paul.

Since some members of this forum took exception to my failure to emphasize this point in the past, for whatever it may be worth I wish to note that the chapel is unrecognized by the Novus Ordo diocesan authorities. I pass no judgement on anyone's liturgical practices, preferences, or opinions. Our purpose (speaking for myself and family) is simply to conserve and keep alive the traditions of the Latin Rite during the most sacred time of the liturgical year. We are convinced that as Catholics we have every right to participate in these rites with no further permission or indulgence required.

A schedule will be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, we would benefit and very much welcome the participation of anyone capable of and interested in singing the Gregorian parts of the Triduum and Easter, to include Tenebrae each evening (starting Wednesday evening, anticipating Matins & Lauds for Holy Thursday) and Easter Matins & Lauds Saturday afternoon.

We would also welcome polyphonists to assist with three-, four-, and five-part pieces by the standard Renaissance composers (and some others).

Reasonable travel and lodging expenses can be covered by the chapel along with, funds permitting, a very modest stipend.

We welcome your sincere and open minded reflection on this positive opportunity to help us commemorate the Church's most venerable and revered liturgical ceremonies. In the event your local opportunities for the Old Holy Week are limited or non-existent, this represents an opportunity to fittingly observe the Triduum and Easter.

Please post or message replies for further details.

References from past participants or other musically inclined colleagues can be provided.

Please circulate this invitation as widely as possible.

Thank you for your interest and attention.

July 16, 2019

WASHINGTON--On July 1, 2019 the USCCB purchased the copyrights to the Revised Grail Psalter and the Old and New Testament Canticles translated by the monks of Conception Abbey in Missouri. The two texts will now together be titled Abbey Psalms and Canticles and will gradually be incorporated into the Church’s official liturgical books. These sacred texts play an important role in the public prayer of the Church, especially in the Liturgy of the Hours and in the readings for Mass.

For over two decades, the bishops have sought a translation of the psalms and canticles that would be more accurate and more conducive to singing and recitation. Since at least 1998 the monks of Conception Abbey have been working to prepare translations that would meet these goals. The USCCB first approved the monks’ translation of the psalter in 2008, and the Holy See then approved that text in 2010. In June 2015 the USCCB approved Conception Abbey’s translation of the canticles, hymn-like passages from the Bible that are used on certain occasions in the liturgy. The bishops subsequently approved a revised version of the psalter in 2016. In May 2018 the Holy See approved both the psalter and the canticles in what should now be their definitive form.

Abbot Gregory Polan, the Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation, was Abbot of Conception Abbey for nearly twenty years and coordinated the preparation of the Abbey Psalms and Canticles. “It is my sincere hope,” he commented, “that this translation of the Psalms and Biblical Canticles will be a source of spiritual nourishment for the liturgy and the private prayer of all who use them.” The USCCB is grateful for the exceptional service that the monks of Conception Abbey have provided to the Church by their work.

Since 2010 many composers have prepared their own settings of these Psalms for use in the liturgy, and some of the more recently-published liturgical books have already begun incorporating material from the new translations. The Abbey Psalms and Canticles will begin to see a wider dissemination in the coming years, especially when new editions of the Lectionary for Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours are completed.

In purchasing these copyrights, the bishops are following the guidelines of the Holy See’s Instruction Liturgiam authenticam, which requires that a Conference of Bishops possess all the rights necessary to promote and safeguard the accurate and appropriate use of the texts of the Sacred Liturgy.

http://www.usccb.org/news/2019/19-132.cfm

The choristers will return home on Friday as previously proposed, but the senior choristers will stay to sing at the Friday afternoon Mass. The review recommended that they return on Saturday evening in order to be rested and rehearsed before the Sunday morning Mass. The Cardinal did not accept this, and instead has maintained the return of the choristers on Sunday morning. He has achieved this by pushing back the time of the Sunday Mass from 10:30 to 12 noon, and Sunday Vespers from 3:30 to 4:30, to allow time for rehearsing on Sunday morning.

Shroud On Television and Social Media April 11, 2020
- from Barrie Schwortz

Special Showing of the Shroud Announced by the Archbishop of Turin.
On Saturday, April 4, 2020, Mons. Cesare Nosiglia, the Archbishop of Turin, announced that on Saturday, April 11, 2020, there will be an extraordinary veneration of the Shroud in the Turin Cathedral, which will be broadcast live on RAI 1 and on social media platforms. According to the official website, it will also be available via www.sindone.org. Currently, the page is only available in the Italian language but includes links to several important pdf documents, so we are also including links to them here, along with English translations of each courtesy of Joe Marino:

Intervento dell’arcivescovo di Torino e vescovo di Susa, mons. Cesare Nosiglia, alla conferenza stampa in diretta streaming dall’Arcivescovado di Torino (Italian language pdf version)
Intervention of the Archbishop of Turin and Bishop of Susa, Msgr. Cesare Nosiglia, at the press conference in live streaming from the Archbishopric of Turin (English language pdf version)

Comunicato stampa = In preghiera davanti alla Sindone: diretta tv e social sabato 11 aprile (Italian language pdf version)
Press Release - In prayer before the Shroud: live TV and social media on Saturday April 11 (English language pdf version)
In addition to the above articles that came directly from Turin, there were several other reports in the media (and I expect more to come this week leading up to the event) so we are including links to some of them here. We will update this list if other important articles become available.

Shroud of Turin to be shown via TV and social media for coronavirus outbreak by Elise Ann Allen, Senior Correspondent, CRUX, Apr 4, 2020 (English language web article)

Shroud of Turin Goes on Rare Display Amid Coronavirus Pandemic by Francis X. Rocca, Wall Street Journal, April 5, 2020 (Site requires subscription to read entire article)

Archdiocese to livestream display Shroud of Turin on Holy Saturday, Catholic News Service, April 5, 2020
In an effort to get this update online promptly, I am intentionally keeping it brief and not including a lot of additional Shroud materials. The only exception I am making is a link to a Live Facebook Presentation that took place on April 4, 2020 with Dr. Cheryl White and Fr. Peter Mangum of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans in Shreveport, Louisiana. Their Museum of the Holy Shroud features the superb Richard Orareo Collection and I thought you would enjoy seeing it. Dr. White stated that the idea for holding the live streaming event was born when all in-person Shroud lectures were cancelled this year. The video (1:30:47) is available at the above link and starts with a look at some of the Orareo Collection materials on display in the Museum. That is followed by in depth Shroud presentations by Dr. White and Fr. Mangum. The next regular website update will go online sometime in May and will include a full report on these events along with much more. Stay safe and healthy and we'll see you in May!

The traditional music movement is having an impact!

I received my GIA promo flier today and was intrigued to see that their contemporary composers have finally broken down and written contemporary style settings of the propers. Introits only it seems.
Some recording samples: https://www.giamusic.com/store/resource/enter-in-recording-cd868
Stylistically it’s everything one would expect, hippie flutes, tacky cultural appropriation, drums and bar chimes. But the compositional choices all seem to reference the flavor of the original chants.

But it’s the actual text of the mass. Way to influence things CMAA!

One of the candidates is Father Christian Bouchacourt, the current District Superior of France. This harkens back to several discussions we had on the forum about the friendship between Pope Francis and Fr. Bouchacourt when Fr. Bouchacourt was District Superior in South America.

Fr. Bouchacourt is also the young celebrant in the iconic YouTube video series of the traditional High Mass at St. Nicolas du Chardonnet which has also been discussed on this forum many times.

If true, this is indeed cause for rejoicing!
