I've uploaded the Graduale Parvum as it currently exists and has existed for some years. It is a long way from completion:

* The texts are not in line with the ICEL translation but they are good translations that are entirely suitable for sung liturgical use
* The Psalm pointing appears to correspond with Westminster practice that is unfamiliar outside that venue
* There are no offertories

Still, there is widespread interest in this book, so I hope this satisfies that interest. Perhaps they can be adapted by enterprising musicians. As you can see, there is a long, long way to go before a final publishable edition is produced.

Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone had to hand the General Introduction of the Lectionary for Mass, and could point me in the right direction:

After a year of experimenting with the use of the Gradual (from the Graduale Romanum) and the Psalmus Responsorius (from the Graduale Simplex), I will be moving back to a greater use of the Lectionary Psalms, while retaining the Gradual for certain "Red Letter" days (like "Haec dies" on Easter Sunday), and the Simplex Psalms for the Triduum and other days.

My question is, does the GILM permit the Responsorial Psalm from the Lectionary to be sung in the same manner as the Psalmus Responsorius from the Graduale Simplex, that is, with the Respond sung after each verse, rather than after each strophe? (I believe that Collegeville's "Psallite" collection does this, but I haven't seen the book in person.)

After using all methods, I do believe that for sung Responsorial Psalms the performance practice of the Simplex is the more logical, traditional, organically developed, and, if you'll excuse the phrase, pastoral manner of performance; while at the same time, the connections with the readings with the Lectionary Psalms and the proper Graduals is often preferable to the seasonal Psalms of the Simplex; and the melismatic music of the Graduals more conducive to meditation. (At some point, I would like to experiment with a form that combines the best aspects of each of these forms.)

Thanks for your help.

I have been asked to start a schola by our PP and am looking for the best way to make the transition to a full sung Mass, with propers from the GR (over a suitable time period - at least 1 year). However, in order to go gently I would like to involve the congregation in singing some of the propers (most likely the introit). So I am wondering if it's worth investing in a copy of the Graduale Simplex?
A quick internet search brings up many more negative comments than positive ones for this book - so I ask myself if the GS does work as a vehicle for congregational involvement. If it doesn't then we might as well just stick with the authentic chants from the GR and gradually wean the congregation off their hymns rather than passing through an intermediate stage.

You thoughts please.....

The celebrant wishes the Mass to be in Latin, ad orientem, and with Gregorian chants. Though the Graduale Romanum propers are our first choice, our fledgling schola has very little time to rehearse the Graduale Romanum propers for the day, so we decided to resort to the next best chantbook -- the Graduale Simplex (GS).

The GS, however, does not provide the chants for Holy Wednesday. Should we just use the GS chants for the previous Sunday (i.e., Palm Sunday, which, according to the GS, uses the same suite as that of Lent Week 5)?

Also, where can I find an online English translation of the GS's praenotanda and rubrics? We'd very much love to be able to sing the GS chants according to its internal rules, but none in our schola is proficient in Latin. Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

My congregation sings XVIII Agnus and Sanctus in Latin during Advent and Lent, and they know them cold.

Now that it's OT, I see a few options for these two parts:

a) Switch these to something tricky like De Angelis and sing without the congregation (Bad idea: the choir has no time and the congregation loves to sing)
b) Switch them back to "Mass of Remembrance" settings as usual (Is it wise to keep limiting latin and chant to Lent and Advent?)
c) Keep the XVIII and dress it up with some organ accompaniment (I'm worried that would still get old after a whole year), or
d) Teach the congregation a Kyriale Simplex setting like Bartlett describes here (Seems like a logical step but they’re totally new to me; I'm poring over them now and not at all sure which ones I like best)

So the question is: a) What K.S. setting would you use as the next baby-step from Mass XVIII in OT? Or b) Do you have another suggestion that also fits the bill?

Thanks so much!
Hello,

I have two questions regarding an alleluia taken from (Ben Yanke's) Graduale Simplex (pp. 227-228):

(1) There are two verses: “In te Domine speravi” and “Inclina ad me aurem tuam”. Must one sing either one or the other verse, or both verses? In other words:
– just “℣ Alleluia, ℟ Alleluia, ℣ In te Domine speravi, ℟ Alleluia” (e.g.) or:
– “℣ Alleluia, ℟ Alleluia, ℣ In te Domine speravi, ℟ Alleluia, ℣ Inclina ad me, ℟ Alleluia”?

(2) If both verses must be sung, when should the congregation rise? Just at the beginning of the first “Alleluia”, as in most OF masses in vernacular language where only one verse is sung between the two “Alleluia” series, or just before the last “Alleluia” series, as it is customary in masses where the several minutes long “Alleluia” from the Graduale Romanum is used?

Thanks for your help,
Quentin

Over on Facebook, I have created a group for By Flowing Waters: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=117365751610687. There I have made available a link to the 35' film on Vimeo explaining what the book is and how to use the book.

I have just announced a second "edition," one that will correct the errors I and others have noticed, make improvements, and incorporate the new English translation of the Roman Missal.

I say "edition," because I may just make the whole thing available on a CD so that you can print out the revised pages you need for your schola.

Sometime during the course of the 2011 Louisville convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians there will be a scheduled conversation about how By Flowing Waters is being used in parishes and schools, about the changes in the text as a result of the New Edition of the Order of the Mass, and any other subject you wish me to address.

I will have more information about the Spanish edition at that time as well.

Blessings,
Paul
