One of our Sisters Mom has been battling Brain Cancer for the Past two years. We just got word that she is in her last days. The Sister is asking for urgent prayers for conversion of heart in her Mom that she would be willing to receive the sacraments.

She had been a faithful Catholic all through the Sisters Childhood until she was introduced to New Age practices (including the occult aspects of it). Please pray for a miracle in this womans soul. For privacy I just give the initials KG. Thank you so much.

God Bless.

Good day everyone!

I’m Charles, a young musician serving rural parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo. I’ve been a cradle Catholic all my life, but this is my first post here, sharing my experience as a novice Catholic musician.

At 15, I began playing piano at St. Mary’s, Arcade, under the direction of an untrained senior citizen organist and a middle-aged guitarist who favored electric instruments. I started with hymns but soon joined in on the Ordinary. Over the years, with frequent priest changes, coordinating music was difficult. I grew curious about liturgy and sacred music, reading documents like Tra Le Sollecitudini, Sacrosantum Concilium, and the GIRM. I realized Mass music should reflect tradition and sacredness, not just comfort or trends.

Trying to bring these ideas forward, I faced resistance. I was labeled a “purist” and “traditionalist,” but I wanted to choose music that matched the liturgy’s theology. Somehow, I eventually began selecting hymns monthly, leading practices, and teaching choir members about the meaning behind the music. Yet often, traditional selections were removed by the organist and guitarist in favor of less fitting contemporary songs.

My attempts to introduce chant during the Triduum were especially challenging. I tried to bring in Hosanna Filio David for Palm Sunday, but after one practice, it was forgotten. I proposed Ubi Caritas and (the non-St. Thomas Tune) Pange Lingua for Maundy Thursday, only to have them rejected faster than a drone over a military base. For Good Friday, I suggested Crux Fidelis and Stabat Mater; by God’s grace, Stabat Mater was sung a cappella by me, though I wasn’t sure if that was valid. Later, I offered Resurrexi, Pascha Nostrum, and Terra Tremuit for Easter, but whenever Latin appeared, it seemed everyone fled in favor of popular composers like Haugen and Haas.

After much prayer and discernment, I made the difficult decision to resign from my position at St. Mary’s, Arcade. It was a huge step for me, but I felt undervalued, hurt by ageism, and unable to advance the sacred music ministry there. Despite having contributed the most musically to the choir the past year, my authority was trumped simply because “that’s not how we’ve always done it” won out regularly.

Sadly, I’ve noticed that nearly every Catholic musician I’ve encountered—except for the dedicated folks in groups like CMAA and Musica Sacra—suffers from both unintentional and intentional ignorance of Church documents. This lack of formation means many don’t fully understand or appreciate the sacred role of music ministry. Yet despite their lack of knowledge, these musicians believe that what they do is fully valid and blameless. This gap often results in poor music choices and missed opportunities for true liturgical beauty.

Currently, I volunteer at nearby churches and hope to build a choir rooted in sacred music, tradition, and the Graduale Romanum . Yet parish politics, closures, and entrenched preferences make this difficult. The Diocese of Buffalo has seen many closures, complicating ministry opportunities.

I share this not just as a lament, but as a request for prayers and encouragement. Though the journey hasn’t met my early hopes, I remain committed to learning and serving. I seek to grow in knowledge and help others appreciate the beauty and tradition of Catholic liturgical music.

Thank you for listening to my story.

(Save the Liturgy, Save the World)

I (the only orthodox one) serve on the diocesan liturgical committee. The priest/leaader is adamant about all music at liturgy should be for the "people" or assembly as he prefers. That is, in his opinion, a choir should function ONLY to lead the repsonses. There should be no choral music at all. Obviously, he would never allow a choral polyphonic mass setting. Is there any document that is clear on this subject, that is any document that would permit choral settings of the ordinary? It is my understanding (and of course I could be incorret) that "full participation" does not necessarily mean that the congregation MUST sing all parts of the Mass. Please, someone, come to my aid!

Any vagaries in the documents can be clarified and understood in their context by coming to know the Tradition.

It is also important to note that personal preference or taste has never been a consideration in the development of music determined worthy for use at Holy Mass. Cultural adaptations, certainly, but within the same parameters of propriety so that the reverence for the sacrifice of Calvary remains clearly at the core of our worship is not compromised.

The warm fuzziness of a spiritual atmosphere enhanced by rhapsodic piano music, strumming guitars, and sappy hymns doesn’t communicate the harsh, beautiful, frightening reality of what we believe we participate in at Holy Mass. We can see from the level of disaffiliation from the Church and denial that Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist how fragile our belief is. It must be presented richly to the senses in the liturgical action, the environment of the Church, the manner of celebration, and perhaps most especially in the music we sing.

In our current Spotify culture, we only know music as entertainment and not as ritual. This orients our appreciation or lack of appreciation for the music that is sung at Mass. Entertainment has never been music’s purpose in the sacred liturgy. To paraphrase Pope St. Pius X and his comment about Gregorian chant, the more music becomes like entertainment, the less it is acceptable for use in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

With almost sixty years having passed since the liturgical changes, we should now be able to step back and honestly assess the impact of those changes on the Church. There is little disagreement that the liturgy as we have it was not the vision of the Council Fathers.

It would be naïve to suggest that other cultural changes haven’t played their part in undermining our faith, but it would be equally naïve to assume the liturgical and musical changes, as they have been carried out, have had no effect either.

So, what went wrong? To answer that question, we have to become deaf and blind to the liturgy wars, study our past, and retrace our steps back to the ancient liturgy of the Church, and then move forward once again with a purified vision of what the Council called for.

There is a treasure house of music here.

For those without Latin, there is an English translation of the entire office of Holy Week at googlebooks here (PDF). 977 pages. No music. The translations look good. Perhaps this would be useful for those putting together materials.

Our schola will sing the Tenebrae service for Good Friday. Not sure yet how much polyphony we'll attempt. Maybe three pieces, one during each nocturn. Not sure.

All you musicians who sing in any capacity, I encourage you to get your throats blessed today, on the feast of St. Blaise.

Good St. Blaise, pray to God for us, that as sacred musicians, we may use the voices He has given us to sing with beauty, with joyful praise, with supplication, and always to build up His body, the Church. May we be given the grace to cherish and nurture our God-given instruments as well as others' in our care, and to do so with joy in happy times and amidst trials.

Pray for us who work in the service of sacred music, St. Blaise, that we may remain in the Heart of Jesus, so that we who have worked in the vineyard will also be able to use our voices to praise God for eternity in Heaven.

Ok

So, I have been talking about the “C” word for years, no, decades and now we are in it!

Pray like you have never prayed before.

Mass, daily rosary (or multiples thereof), fast, pray, sing, and NEVER FORGET… (if you are in a state of grace) God is “with” you always. As one of our priests said today, he may not be present, but he is with you. He also said that “this is arguably the darkest time in the history of the church.”

For a physical example look up Japanese Tsunami on YouTube and you get a glimpse of how unbelievable it is and how numbing and how mesmerizing the experience maps out in reality.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DKB-BMhbjew

One or 2 miles from you cars are floating away… and most people are still driving down the street.

Diocese of San Jose 2023 Pastoral Plan

San Jose, CA is not my diocese, but I take interest in it because I used to live there. This month the diocese released its 2023 Pastoral Plan that will guide operations for at least the next five years. Several months ago, the diocese hired a lay C-suite level executive in a newly created directorship to oversee the plan's implementation. Link to the document here:
https://www.dsj.org/wp-content/uploads/12-05-23-Pastoral-Plan-DoSJ-Brochure-singles-web-res.pdf

On page 6, the diocese states the following catastrophic declines in Catholic practice:

- While the general population in the diocese has increased by 5.8%, Mass attendance has decreased by 39.8% and children's faith formation enrollment has decreased by 40% over the past ten years.

A 40% drop in Catholic affiliation and practice is alarming, possibly a Blockbuster Video death-spiral level decline, but also consistent with what has occurred in other urbanized, secular regions of the United States.

Of particular interest to people here might be what the diocese proposes regarding worship. That section starts on page 13. On page 15 is this objective about liturgical music:

Objective 4: Lift spirits with engaging, liturgically appropriate music

In our parishes and schools, the People of God can expect:
• Improved quality of liturgical music based on the unique cultural preferences of each parish and school community.
• Highly trained and spiritually formed liturgical music leaders, cantors, and musicians.

The diocese will support parishes and schools by:
• Appointing a diocesan leader for music ministry.
• Updating diocesan music ministry standards, policies, procedures, roles, responsibilities, etc., based on best practices from within and beyond our diocese.
• Developing and supporting music ministry formation and training programs for liturgical music leaders.

Does anyone agree with me that this objective is flawed from its inception and at its core? "Lifting spirits with engaging music" is what has been attempted for the past forty years or more. That hasn't worked. Whether such music has contributed to the exodus of Catholics from attending Mass is debatable; I believe it has because it has made Mass seem like a secular activity with "Jesus sprinkles" that can easily be regarded as optional or uncompelling. Basing music choices on "the unique cultural preferences of each parish and school" is not a criterion for liturgical music that appears anywhere in the Church's documents or rubrics about liturgical music.

Regarding the goal of having "highly trained and spiritually formed liturgical music leaders, cantors and musicians," good luck with that when the document also admits that there are "financial challenges, staffing and compensation challenges, and rising costs of living" in most parishes. (pages 6-7)

I think implementing Vatican II's liturgical reforms and the new Missal authentically is going to take about 200 years. I also expect further catastrophic declines in Catholic affiliation and practice in the United States over the next 30 years. Many dioceses will contract further, and there will be even more parish mergers and consolidations.

Wow. Beauty really is in the tradition. Preaching to the choir here, but what beauty to hear the Mass sung! I believe it was at St. John Cantius Catholic Church. Could be wrong. I do know the Novus Ordo I watched was definitely at St. John Cantius and it was the most gracious Novus Ordo I've witnessed. It was interesting to compare the Novus Ordo at a church like St. John Cantius vs. The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Now I will say the Shrine has an immaculate choir (suitable for venerating Our Lady), but I liked everything else concerning the execution of the liturgy by St. John Cantius. Anyways, a strange life-changing moment in that there was very little emotion but a whole lot of reverence. That's something I miss when I watch The Shrine's Mass.

My pastor and communications director want to run some catechesis in the parish communications on the reasons for use and the beauty of incense.

Does anyone have particular articles about incense that you recommend?

Do you have your own materials on this subject that we could use as a basis to start our work on edifying the congregation in this regard?

Thanks!

Hey everyone,
I am a professional violinist considering the religious life.
My dream would be to be able to continue seriously doing music as a religious sister, for example by playing classical music in the context of the liturgy or giving concerts with the aim of evangelization. Ideally there would be sufficient time for daily individual practise (several hours) to maintain a good level of playing and a group of other professional musicians in the community with whom we could play together. It could also be connected to education and teaching.
Being a religious community, the day would of course be centered around prayer: Holy Mass, Divine Office, mental prayer, Eucharistic adoration, the Rosary...
Has anyone heard of a catholic religious order for women that is somewhat similar to what I have described? Or is such a congregation yet to be founded?
Thank you for any input!

I know that such things exist : Bill Riccio being one of them, but they are rare as hen's teeth. Without boring you with a bunch of details, suffice to say that I feel, and have felt for a while, that I am being called to be a permanent acolyte.

My question is : does anyone know what the procedure might be? Should my Pastor simply write the chancery and request it? Can I get shuffled around to different parishes like permanent deacons, or would I simply stay where I am like ECMHCs? -- I want to stay in my current position as D.M.

I realize that this probably isn't the place to ask these questions, but knowing my diocese, the people in charge of the Lay Ministry Formation thingy wouldn't know what an Acolyte was. Thanks for any help you can give me; and prayers are always welcome.

My pastor asked me to design cards/posters to hang in our sacristy that had the traditional prayers for altar servers pre/post mass some while ago. Our recently reassigned parochial vicar asked me to redesign them for the sacristy at his new parish, which had me revisit the project.

I’d like to share the fruits of my labor here: https://psallitedomino.com/blog/altar-server-prayer-cards

Free PDFs for printing for your own sacristies, should you like them.
